Why social media can be bad
  • When social media is used incorrectly, it can have major consequences. Many things can cause a bad situation, a picture, post, video, certain friends, or what those friends may post on your profile. Any of these can cause a person to lose a job offer, current job, scholarship, acceptance to a school, or even cause legal problems. Many companies, organizations, and schools are looking at a person’s social networking profile. It is extremely critical for people to filter what they put on their page.
  • It is easier to say something mean online than it is to say in person. Many people are using social media to tease, bully, or harass others. It is extremely easy to video something that people may not want others to see, and a simply upload will make it public to the world. There are stories in the news about kids seeing something on a person’s profile and then beating the person up because of it, there have even been deaths caught on tape and posted online. “Dr. Patricia Walton Agatston, a counselor with the Cobb Prevention/Intervention Center in Marietta, Georgia, is co-author of "Cyber Bullying: Bullying in the Digital Age." She says posting videos online allows for bullies to be more visible to authorities.”
  • There have also been cases of men finding girls on the internet and becoming friends with them. They pretend to be younger and want to meet the girls, some get caught, and others don’t.
  • Privacy has become a major issue when dealing with social networking. If someone on facebook or twitter puts that they are going out of town for the weekend, someone may read that and rob their house because they know no one is there. If someone puts their birthday or address on their profile, someone may see that and use it for identity theft. If someone puts their phone number or address for people to see, someone may use it and become a stalker. There are many instances where people have had things like this happen to them, so the sites themselves are trying to help people protect their information more by blocking certain people, or only allowing certain people to view their page.
